A considerable lot of us now go through hours and hours daily on different social media platforms, i.e., Facebook, and a few literally live their lives online as much as they do offline. This is always going to be an important topic, social media isn’t going anywhere, but digital legacies are certainly growing in importance.
So, it is basically changing the way we think about ourselves from “me” to “we”, and especially when it comes to social identity activation, the likes, emojis, reactions, and comments take our hormones to the seventh sky.
The Third Eye Perspective
If we start looking that when it is the last time you walked into a restaurant and saw an entire table of friends on their phone or a group of people on the street or maybe your family in the morning, each content to be in their own world, nearly unaware of the reality around them. Only if the majority of the human interaction is non-verbal and we exchange information in 0’s and 1’s, what would happen if you removed everything but that small remainder for over a decade as it turns out, that was the very experiment that we are living in, today and we all are just mere puppets now of our digital lives. I’m one of the puppets that hangs with the thread of my digital life.
I remember when I was growing up way back in the day, a time when everyone had a cellphone and computers were named after the year they were made in, yes. Well, in that perspective, I’m not a dinosaur or a mammoth yet, but I grew up in a unique time where half of my childhood was without the major technology and platforms that seem to rule parts of lives today, YES, We Are Puppets, believe it or not. So the other part of my childhood was on a roller coaster ride into the new age of technology. In the earlier half of my childhood, my life seemed different, I remember Yes. The people's interactions around you were different. If I wanted to talk to my aunt about something, she lives in New York and I’m a Santa Monica guy, I have to fly there or write a letter to find or get in contact with her. In that genre of time, I can spend uninterrupted time with them in the same room. That time was good, there was nothing pulling my strings. Nothing in the back of my mind reminds me that there are hundreds of other people sharing information that I might be missing out on.
That degree of presence and little spices added to my practice day in and day out has now created a different richness to my interaction with intricacies and nuances that seem to be slowly and gradually lost in the midst of my past.
The further we progress into this new age of technological advancement, the further we are leaving the core essence of what we are leaving behind. From what I scavenged, there is a massive mismatch between the rate of adaptation and advancements between what we are, biology, and what we offered, technology. There is a law of accelerating returns, in which the pace of advancements in information technology is exponential, and while technology continues to grow at a rapid pace, we are still trying to figure out how it actually impacts us?
Especially when we are teaching algorithms to predict and adjust our daily life behavior?
Digital Adrenaline
I don’t think that anyone’s denying that social media, as well as instant communication, is extremely addictive, and its addiction falls right within the same symptoms as substance abuse. So yes, it is safe to say that 7 billion people around the globe are puppets and a bunch of digital adrenaline junkies.
For me, it is changing all of us, and not changing the behaviors through hacking our positive mindset but also how, over time, it changes our perception of what we really meant to do, the reality of life. This is something we will pass on to the next generation, in which their digital presence may end up being more important than reality itself.
So the question is, how are we going to stop all of this from happening? The answer to it is to shut it all down and just pull the plug on the big digital tech or preserve it to connect with future generations.
The truth is that we have opened pandora’s box, and this is the reality that we are now faced with, so what’s the path forward?
